Additional New Year celebrations are in store for the Niagara Region with the coming of the Chinese New Year on February 16. In Niagara, the celebrations this year are even more important as 2018 has been designated as the Canada-China Year of Tourism.
The Chinese New Year is the most important celebration in China. It is celebrated in the country for around two weeks with families coming together for dinner. There are colourful lanterns and decorations, ringing of the bells, traditional lion dances and lighting of firecrackers. This festival is also known as the Lunar New Year, and the Chinese calendar also incorporates the Chinese Zodiac with 12 signs, each represented by an animal. 2018 is the Year of the Dog according to the calendar. To give locals and tourists a taste of these wonderful celebrations, there are a few events taking place across Niagara for the Chinese New Year.
In the city of Niagara Falls, the spectacular waterfalls are always an integral part of any celebration. While illumination of the falls happens regularly along with fireworks, on special occasions, the waterfalls are illuminated in certain colours. On Thursday, February 15th, the Falls will be illuminated red between 7pm – 11pm.
Get ready to welcome the Chinese New Year in Niagara this year. Don’t miss out on all the fun!
