Some may scoff at the idea of a ghost tour at Fort George, in Niagara-On-The-Lake.
There is no such thing as ghosts, right? Maybe, and maybe not.
Take a tour for yourself and draw your own conclusions. Fort George is regarded as one of the most haunted spots in Canada. Its history makes the location ripe for attracting spirits and apparitions.
Fort George was built by the British in 1796-1799. It was the site of a devastating scene in May of 1813, when the American military ambushed the Fort. They destroyed all but one building, with many fatalities.
The U.S. soldiers captured the town of Niagara on the Lake and occupied Fort George for 7 months. They aspired to invade and conquer much of Upper Canada. They were shortly thereafter repulsed by Native warriors and the British at various battles nearby. They were forced to abandon Fort George and to their imperial ambitions for the region.
This history has all the hallmarks of a haunted spot:
- a military base
- a site of brutal battles and bloody deaths
- a place near which indigenous tribes fought back against their Anglo-Saxon oppressors
Are we beginning to conjure images of an Indian burial ground, anyone?
Some believe Fort George is haunted by the spirits of soldiers and their family.
With a whole host of shadowy figures such as:
- The Tall Man – who according to one ghost hunter, is often spotted skulking around the blockhouses, peering out from behind the bunk-beds, and following guests to and from the living spaces
- The Man in White – a quiet, peaceful spirit who is most often seen lounging on the beds, silently watching guests as they pass by

Let Ghost Tours of Fort George’s guides pique your curiosity with tales about spooky encounters with the paranormal. No, this is not a haunted house where actors pop out at you. But if you enter the Officer’s Quarters, you just might see the doors mysteriously pop open and slam shut on their own.
