Chippawa Battlefield Park

A beautiful park with a bloody history

Situated along the scenic Niagara Parkway, this area has a storied history. The Battle of Chippawa marked the beginning of one of the longest battles of the War of 1812.

At the battle’s conclusion, over 800 militiamen – not professional soldiers but regular citizens – lay wounded or dead. Despite its gruesome history, Chippawa is considered one of the most picturesque battlefield parks.

Today, visitors can access the park year-round and take self-guided tours at their own pace. Throughout the park is an array of panels outlining its history and explaining the role of the battle’s participants.

Small and simple but it marks the spot where the US Forces tried to invade Canada during the War of 1812. Some flags and a monument mark the spot along the Niagara River. Lots of parking.
